A code must have several properties. First, the code words in it shouldn't be too similar. Repeating bits may make a message more durable, but they also make it take longer to send. Eret dnor says you can think about distance as how noise resilient you are. A good code should have both a large distance between distinct code words and a high rate of transmitting real information.
