Howard Carter kept a very detailed diary of his excavations and the entry for the 4th of November 1922 starts like this, hardly had I arrived on the work the next morning, than the unusual silence due to the stoppage of the work told me that something extraordinary had happened. Lapis lazuli was incredibly rare in the ancient world, it came from the mountains of Afghanistan which is where it's still mine today.
