Freud loved dostoevsky, which is not a surprise. The depth of the psychological insight is probably what he had in mind when he said that creative writers have valuable insights we are trying to learn from. Freud believed cocaine had medicinal value. So did lots of people at the time. And i think it's a very safe assumption that freud would have encountered these sherlock holmes stories.
