Is Small Talk a Closed Environment?
The code is actually stored in a binery form. It isn't an abstract syntax tree, but it's is stored in a very compact form. And your code base has mappings from the hashes to the names that you originally used. Or you can keep the source code around if you want as well. The repository format of the code base is very aminable to being version by git.
