Abe Worsell was trying to figure out how do you go from the DNA double helix to the next level up, called beads on a string. But there's something about it that I can't calculate, which is a mathematical number called the linking number. Francis Crick of Watson and Crick fame said if you buy a piece of ribbon and then make a model out of ribbon of the DNA winding pattern, those twists are locked in there. If you try to untwist part of it, it'll make more twists somewhere else.
