Is R&D an Expense?

R&D expenses is one of tech companies' biggest expenditures, but it's listed as an expense. A bigger way or a bigger debate in the investment community isn't necessarily about just the spending on R&D. One that trips up a lot of people is the way that we account for stock-based compensation.
