The History of the British Government's Famine Response
The British grain industry was angry over both the repeal of the corn laws and the import of maize. Once it was milled into meal, the maize was going to be sold at the rate of a penny per pound. But just like with the imported grain, a lot of people who really needed it just could not afford to buy it. There were no big influxes of food or monetary relief coming from the government.
