The Blue Stocking Doctrine
The word bluestocking, as you say, we could compare it to other words used of learned societies, like diletante virtuoso. I think they were self conscious of being seen as a group by other people. Ah, but i don't think they necessarily planned it. It happened. And the doctrine was rational conversation. Now, rational conversation in the eighteenth century is a tum that needs to be unpacked a bit,. because it refers back to the classical period and refersback to the renaissance in terms of conversation.
