The Attitude of the First Governor General Warren Hastings
India was seen as a place that you traded with because it was very wealthy. In the mid to late 18th century, there was a more relaxed attitude to race and racial difference than later developed in India. Warren Hastings is interesting because he does represent a particular strand of British intellectual responses to the East. But in Eastern India, it played a unique role in the history of imperialism - by accident.
