The History of Persuasion
During World War II, the U.S. government tried to counter enemy propaganda with its own messaging. Roosevelt's Office of War Information popularized iconic American images like Rosie the Riveter and circulated Uncle Sam's call to arms. Voice of America would report the United States account of the news. After the Allies' victory, Voice of America's work continued in the early years of the Cold War. At the same time, the CIA established Radio Free Europe, which was originally just a network of radio stations broadcasting to Soviet satellite countries that aired Americanized news and culture shows.
