Tolkien loved the idea of mortals wandering into a fairy realm and meeting strange things. The whole trip into the old forest is almost explicitly a fairy encounter in that way. George MacDonald was an author whom Tolkien talked about and certainly whom Tolkien read. He had powerful influence on Tolkien, Lewis and didn't even Chesterton read him.
