The Tension Between Conservatism and Radical Change
A lot of supposedly radical scholarship on the historical Jesus over the past, over the 20th century and before has tried to emphasize how morally playful Jesus was. And some of this, it can be, is good scholarship, but some of it goes too far, I think, in claiming that Jesus was something like a post-1960s radical. Whereas I don't think that would just simply wouldn't have made any sense in first century Galilee. So those are the sort of rare ideas that are coming out of this tension between conservatism and radical change.
