Richard Speck was born in Kirkwood, Illinois on December 6, 1941. The seventh of eight children, his father worked as a manual laborer. Richard and his younger sister moved to Texas with their mother and her new husband. His stepfather Carl was extremely abusive, both physically and verbally.
