I'm between a rock and a hard place or I have to choose between two evils are both very common phrases for people who don't really want to make either choice. If someone is telling a story but not giving enough detail, this means they're not leaving much to the imagination here. This could be pretty insulting to say to someone, like, oh, you're fresh off the boat. It's just a joking phrase that was used to say I came here and I hadn't learned everything yet.
