The Gamut of Race and the Civil War
You have the gamut of people. You might have individuals who don't think that slavery should expand beyond its current borders, but are okay where it exists. Then you have outright people who are this racist. The N word is frequent on their lips and the way they describe African Americans. And I can see that with Buchanan is a good example of that. Andrew Johnson after the Civil War. Even Frederick Douglass, one of my favorite quotes Andrew Johnson,. His commentary on Johnson after that meeting was like, well, he's not a friend of the black people. They all know what to do with that because they never had a stake before.
