I can't imagine how unsettling that must have been. It maybe of being the other and not quite longing in this very waspy kind of environment by that feeling of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. That sense of insecurity must have been dramatic later in life, when you face this situation which will talk about more. When you know the president and his men essentially turned on you, you the dutiful rules following diplomat. But they didn't choose that path. They could just have recalled me. We'll get into that.
