The run really works by detecting surprise when there's something surprising that you weren't expecting. A lot of neural mechanisms become focused on acquiring new information and paying attention to that source of surprise. It's all about reducing uncertainty. So if someone forms a first impression and then they get some information that violates their expectations, sometimes exceeds their expectation, then starts a new process of updating.
