Introduction
In 1940, hatti daniel became the first black performer to be nominated for and win an oscar for her role as the slave mammy in gun with the wind. By 19 39, hattie had been playing versions of mammy for decades. Mammy was shor hand for a type of caricature popularized in black face minstrel shows. The history of minstrelsy is thus very, very complicated. Join us next week for part two of our series, six degrees of song of the south in the present day.
