The Rise and Fall of the Church

I see the history of the Church as a Loch Ness monster, actually. I was much influenced once by reading the sermons of a reforming bishop in the 13th century and saw the mendicants through his eyes. And none of us would have heard of the orders if it hadn't been for the reforming bishops. These two little groups of holy people were literally godsend for these bishops. They go onto the housing estates or the Shenshanti towns on the edge of towns where there's no parish provision and where the land is cheap.
