Climate Change and the Peatlands in the Far North
Peatlands cover around 3% of the world's land surface but hold 25% of all carbon stored in soils. Our estimate is that the peat itself stores 30 billion tons of carbon and that's equivalent to all of the fossil fuel emissions from the entire world for three years. In this Arctic region, we've seen really high temperatures in 2019, 2020, and 2021. And coincident with those high temperatures have been enormous areas of fire.
