The King intervenes ultimately on Cook's side in an incident where violence is being used. But it doesn't work, does it? Not only is the marriage a failure, but it doesn't get Cook back in favor. The reason why Cook has this final kind of ambitious last phase is in part because he realizes over time that although he's back on the Privy Council, he'll never be given a big job.
