The Artist in the Story of the Soldier Artist

The soldier artist, like the writer, is trying to create something out of this devastation. And I think Pyle, in particular, when he encounters one soldier artist, is sort of amazed that this man has the sort of time and energy for his drawing. It's not something Pyle quite understands at first, but it's a wonderful testimony to this sense of a kind of bearing witness...to violence otherwise so difficult to comprehend.
