The trickster in one way is the instinctive demand for life to progress. When life becomes interactively difficult, that a tricking instinct rises up. Tricksters are highly adaptable. They can put on costumes. Some of the tricksters like Loki transform into different creatures back and forth. The tricksters are ambiguous, just as you had said, morally ambiguous. And they are subversive in most cultures, in most fairy tales and myths.
