CHAPTER

The History of the Kansas City Culture

Serpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio is described as the world's largest serpent effigy. The site was already being used for ceremonial purposes by a hope well tradition tribes around 1000 years ago. After the turn of the first millennium it appears that hope well traditions migrated further outwards. There is evidence of this in southern Alabama and Georgia where these traditions reach the east coast and the Atlantic Ocean. At a similar time cultures such as the Marksville culture of the modern state of Louisiana stretched inland to the Mississippi and Arkansas.
