Serpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio is described as the world's largest serpent effigy. The site was already being used for ceremonial purposes by a hope well tradition tribes around 1000 years ago. There is evidence of this in southern Alabama and Georgia where these traditions reach the east coast and the Atlantic Ocean. At a similar time cultures such as the Marksville culture of the modern state of Louisiana stretched inland to the Mississippi and Arkansas.
