The Balance Between Luxury and Security in Castle Design
In their heyday, castles offer their inhabitants lives of unparalleled luxury. Their interiors are replete with creature comforts including drinking wells and private bed chambers for the nobles and their household. By the early 12th century their owners spend far more time enjoying leisure activities like hunting and feasting than they do fending off assaults. At the heart of medieval castle life is the great hall where the Lord and Lady host guests had candlelit banquets while entertained by musicians, troubadour poets, jesters and more.
