The Role of Thoughts in History

Historical knowledge is the reenactment in historians mind of the thought whose history he is studying. In some ways, it's not actually that different from detective work. When a detective goes and tries to figure out, well, what happened here? He doesn't just look at the facts. He tries to construct his mind. The soul informs the matter such that we shape the world around us with our thoughts.
