Religion in China Around the Golden Turbans
Religion in china around this time is a complicated subject. Confucianism wasn't exact a religion, more a series of guide lines about how a society should be ordered and run. In the countryside, religious beliefs were extremely diverse from region to region. This extract from suma chien's records of the grand historian gives you a sense of this variety. The state was locked in a number of rolling insurgencies in the west which combined with the peasant rebellions in the east to further sap its strength. These were the devout religious crusades of the yellow turbans.
