The Rise and Fall of Advisory Opinions in International Law
Vanuatu is tabling a climate resolution during the current session of the General Assembly requesting an advisory opinion. I don't think there's ever been such an active period for advisory opinions in international law, says DAPO director-general Peter Bergen. In the very early days of the court and of the UN, you had advisory opinions that were closely connected with the functions of the United Nations. But thankfully no longer has to do that kind of work. The requests relating to climate change are probably of this nature.
