The History of the Internet

There are different ways of tracing the history of the internet although there's a fairly well-established story about how it came about. The question is partly was the internet only ever going to be like this how much of the its negative features are built into it and that partly raises the question of where did it come from in the first place. There have been two competing images of what the internet would be if you could pin it down to one of them which arguably it has turned into. It also feeds back in influences the model of software development as we go through pre-internet times.
