Shostakovich's First Theme
The music is hopeless, drained of life and limb. It drags its feet in the accompaniment while the melodic line wanders around as if it is blind. Notice again that about three minutes into the piece, the gigantic wind, brass and percussion sections haven't uttered a note. In the second part of the first theme, we will hear the flute for the first time, as a shadow and an enhancement to the first violins.
