Why Do Squirrels Have Big, Bushy Tails?

Cora wonders, why do squirrels have big, bushy tails? One explanation is they use them as a type of like scarf or blanket. They might also use their tail to block the wint another possibility is that that big bushy tail can serve as is like a parasol or an umbrella against the hot sun or from rain. A lot of times when i see squirrels and they're waving their tail up and down, they're sort of what what iwould call flagging the tail. And there's a hawk overhead, for example, they strike at that tail rather than at the head.
