Is There a Black Hole Without General Relativity?
The idea of an object so massive that it might pull light to its surface predates general relativity. It was more than 50 years before we saw any evidence that these things were actually out there in the universe. If you imagine a planet so dense that it traps light, then that's basically a black hole, isn't it?
