Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor
Frida Ghitis: Susan Sontag's famous essay was called Illness as Metaphor. She writes that she repressed her own emotions in order to be accepted by other people, precisely the dynamics that lead to illness. Ghitis: It's very sad to read her because on the one hand, she even knew that she disconnected from her true self in order to adapt to her childhood environment. And at the same time, denied that that had anything to do with the illnesses.
