Macrobius' Commentary on Cicero's Dream

Cicero includes a summary of an argument for the immortality of the soul taken from Plato's Phaedrus. Macrobius recognizes a highest god who is ineffable, just like Platonists. He accepts Platonists' views on ethics, holding that the goal for mankind should be intellectual contemplation withdrawn from things of the body. One would never know from this commentary that Cicero was actually sympathetic to the skeptical academy.
