There is no scientific evidence of any correlation between on pavement cracks and the risk of bear attack, ok? But what it does do is it encourages the children to keep an eye on where they're putting their feet. It sort of thing that's basically impossible to mandate. And so the creation of socially beneficial customs, which eventually then get formalized as laws, doesn't necessarily require reasoning. It simply requires an empirical measurement of the benefit of following that belief. A belief in an omniscient god is probably a pretty good way of keeping people well behaved.
