Sam Zomuri spent the winter of 1932 walking through warehouses and standing on banana boats. He learned among other things that the banana captains were on orders from Boston to lay off the throttle, thus saving gasoline. By quick calculations, Sam realized that whatever money was being saved on fuel was being lost on the high percentage of fruit that ripened during the extra days on the water.
