George Lucas has been incredibly silent on it, because he likes the idea of the mystery surrounding the mysterious helper figure. You know, you want to Yoda to be without backstory. It's very hard for us not to make this a constant pop culture component. I still can't believe Yoda lost Emperor Palpatine.
