The Appeal Is Consider How Far You've Fallen

There's this idea that we as Christians in order to reach people, we've got to beat them over the head with their sin. Jesus' motivation is love. His kindness will unhinge them faster than anything else. The thing that broke me before Jesus was not being told that I was a mess because I knew that. It was being told that God loved me in spite of that and I could not handle it. This is the power of the gospel.
