Aristotle's Theory of Cause
Aristotle used the term cause in a very broad sense. He elaborates his theory of four causes or as a count of the four causes. There are four causes of anything in nature, Aristotle thinks. The first cause he calls the material cause. That out of which a thing is made. It's analogical to use a term dear to Thomas: "polyvalent"
