As an undergraduate at Northwestern University in the early 1970s, you were interested in issues of race and inequality. You wanted to be a part of policy debates on inequality and race but was also fascinated by applied mathematics. How did you reconcile these two worlds? "It just seemed a mile away from anything relevant to the urgent political moment," he says.
