I think that one of the compounding factors in our apprehension around how do we encounter people that are different to us is the fact that so much of our life has been stratified into people that just like us. Jesus does not set up a professional ethics of care for all those who identify as Christians or set up a form for us to fill out when we try to decide something. He gives us the example of a kind of human interaction which really puts us on the spot, doesn't it? It doesn't give us the ready answer in situations. And I think this for a reason that Jesus told stories and parables and things that have a lot of mystery at their heart.
