The Limits of Running Out of Oxygen
The task of holding your breath is primarily mental. Simple tasks from underwater force you to prioritize the task above your breath. Most people will give up before they get to the next phase, when the body starts to take over. Once you've learned to do that, there's kind of no limit to how long you can hold your breath until you actually do run out of oxygen. And when you get to that point, you will black out.
