William Carey began his career as an uneducated shoemaker in England, the 1700s. He ended his life in India as the father of modern missions and was almost entirely self-taught. When he died at the tender age of 31 after six short years of missionary labor, he had made excellent translations of the entire New Testament into Hindustani, Urdu, and Persian.
