Elon Musk is trying to stop NASA from landing a person on the moon in 2024 or 2025. If you want to go to Mars, you need to land on the moon and have a settlement there. Any ship that is big enough to survive the trip to Mars would need to be built in orbit because you could not launch it from the earth. It'd be too big.
