In the middle ages, baths were designed to fit multiple people and they were quite big events. The crusaders brought the idea of hot baths and sweating rooms home with them. They were huge public bath houses that would open up beneath the sign of a turk's head,. And in them, they could stew to their hearts content. So, yes, it was a really strange, strange journey from bathing in the nutty to having a good old fashioned stew and dumplings.
