Bruce Winter notes that Seneca's mother, his mother's virtues contrast sharply with the alternative lifestyle of the new Roman woman. The concerns reflected in First Timothy two are very similar to those of Seneca. And it really could open up the historical context so we can have a better understanding what Paul is actually addressing.
