Diaprata Is a Brand

Diaprata has done a good job of instilling fear in the fashion industry that wasn't there before but they also really relish and bullying people publicly. Because it's on social media they're grabbing our attention with like pictures and flashy captions. They're sort of making entertainment out of this public villainry are these public villains just you know designers and influencers i'm not saying people aren't deserving of it i'm just saying thatThat's what that's what they do that is their brand.

fashion are they relevant i noticed that they were posting sponsored content for the movie babylon where they just posted a bunch of memes i just can't tell if i'm just become less interested or if they've like dialed back it really could just be on the problem but anyway i'm talking
Speaker 1
more about just like their general brand right now like i'm talking about who they are and like what we know them as not what they're doing right now necessarily specifically you know many times they have been progressive and like effectively dismantled or like at least throttle-termful systems and they've done a good job of instilling fear in the fashion industry that wasn't there before but they also like really relish and bullying people publicly and because it's on social media they're grabbing our attention with like pictures and flashy captions and they're sort of making entertainment out of this public villainry
Speaker 2
are these public villains just you know designers and influencers i'm not saying people
Speaker 1
aren't deserving of it i'm just saying that that's what that's what they do that is their brand it's it doesn't matter whether or not their people are deserving it's it's more the question of what diaprata is is a brand which is that like for example one time they put out this post criticizing the gap for partnering with connie west and this was all before his like recent anti-Semitic remarks but he had still said quite a few like fucked up things in public i think this was his like slavery was a choice era but yeah then they got like in a bunch of trouble because the post featured these memes of like fake easy t-shirts that said maga and slavery was a choice on them which obviously if you're looking at diaprata you would immediately think that that's actually what easy had put out i mean that's not a far cry no but then it wasn't actually connie who was artistically driving this project it was like a much smaller nigerian designer named um oh i don't want to mess up her name moa lola augon lecy i hope i didn't butcher that who it helms that project side-stepping the criticisms against them they made this post with like little research in a very tone-dav very unjournalistic way like it doesn't matter whether or not what he did was close to that you're making memes out of breaking a story that's right like you're you shouldn't be making memes about that because but their gorilla grip over our culture makes it feel like they're safe they can make memes they can make sport out of this they can make these toxic
Speaker 2
posts yeah is this weird kind of middle ground
Speaker 1
between like talking about very serious issues but then like make it instagram like it has to still be visually interesting well it's literally that the washington post had an instagram that literally made memes about like the gaza strip it's like what are you doing like obviously that's not the same thing but it is like if you're trying to be a t taken seriously then i don't know if you can be teetering entertainment and serious and like serious breaking stories or like maybe split them up one post is an entertainment post that is specifically about some fluff subject and another post is about breaking a story like you can't be merging the two
Speaker 2
um you know i do think it is because
Speaker 1
they're a team of two like just trying to churn out content and like that requires less effort or like it requires you to be less uh extensive in your fact checking and everything yeah because it's the wild west like you just don't have to kimberly m jenkins who's an assistant professor of fashion studies and she's also the founder of the fashion race database has a really good quote about kind of like what diaprata is and what its role in our culture is which i don't think is necessarily journalistic i think and more has to do with they kind of innovated this late 2010s era of call-out culture um she says what diaprata is doing is encouraging everyone to deputize themselves and give themselves the authority to go after someone and drag them into the public forum yeah and i do think that it really did almost uh officiate that oh
Speaker 2
totally
