In the Iron Age, Assyria became known for horsemanship and chariot riding. The art that survives from ancient Assyria celebrates great kings as hunters and warriors. Some of this information was not really known before the mid-19th century. Austin Henry Laird began excavating Nineveh mounds in 1840s to find items like ivory figurines of goddesses.
