In the weeks before the election, paramilitary groups would be brought on as auxiliary police and their ability to suppress those deemed to be enemies of the state would be increased. All of this made campaign actions in the last days before the election almost impossible for the oppositional parties. The Communists lost just a million votes dropping from 5.9 million in November 1932 to 4.8 million.
