The committee in the 19 60 said, we can't allow people to change their sex re classification because somebody, some train person, might marry someone and be committing fraud on the public. So they were really worried about a marriages and sort of secret ersat same sex marriage. That both rhymes with like, a very old, sort of, like primal slur against trans folks - that theyre somehow deceiving people or that they're tricking people. But then there's also this idea like committing fraud against the public, that it would somehow be some sort of abuse of public resources or something to do.
Trans people have existed as long as, you know, people have. But the barriers to legal inclusion and equality are still higher than most people realize. “Sex is as Sex Does” author Paisley Currah joins Adam to discuss why institutions have been slow to give legal recognition to trans identities, why Republicans have shifted their attacks from bathroom policies to trans youth in sports, and why the struggle for trans equality is tied to feminism and women’s liberation.
